Bio

Lamar Wood was born in Atlanta Georgia in 1954. He received his MFA degree in Painting and Drawing in 1979 from the Lamar Dodd School of Art at University of Georgia, completing his graduate work in Cortona Italy. From Italy he moved to France where for the following year he continued to draw and paint while teaching English.

Lamar works primarily in the traditional media of oil, acrylic, pastel, and watercolor. He also has experience in computer graphics, and in 1998 he created the web page artwork for the award winning public radio program The Individual in a Global Society. His paintings are included in both corporate and private collections in the United States and Europe.

Lamar’s work reflects an ongoing investigation of ways to represent the world, both internal and external, whether through portraiture and classical studies of natural surroundings or expressionistic treatments of the imaginary and fantastic. In recent years Lamar has begun working with cast concrete to create a variety of sculptural objects, both decorative and utilitarian.

Lamar has a broad range of teaching experience, including two public school residencies sponsored by the Georgia Council for the Arts, and more than ten years of adjunct teaching for the Lamar Dodd School of Art. He currently lives near Athens, Georgia and is in the process of restoring an early nineteenth century plantation house to become Brick House Studio, a facility for classes and workshops, as well as gallery (and garden) exhibition opportunities.
